1923 S Standing Liberty Quarter (SLQ) Choice AU
New Items Added: PAMP SUISSE PLATINUM BARS. Platinum is a heavy hard silvery metallic element, a precious metal used in jewellery, coins, chemical engineering, and a catalyst used in industry and for car exhausts. Platinum is closely related to five other metals, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium, and iridium. Collectively these six are known as the platinum group metals, often referred to as PGMs. They all have slightly similar atomic structures, leading to some similarity in chemical and mechanical properties, although there are, of course, many important differences. 1923 S Standing Liberty Quarter (SLQ) Choice AU. A very high end example of they key date 1923-S Standing Liberty Quarter (SLQ) in Choice AU Condition. This outstanding specimen shows great luster and very little wear. The reverse is more subdued (it looks like there is some light toning, deposition, or dirt? on the reverse but I didn't want to try to remove it as I am no expert on the subject and thought it actually has a nice look to it as it is). Towards the periphery and near the head of the eagle on the reverse you can again see that strong luster shining through!
The Standing Liberty Quarter was issued from 1916 to 1930 by the United States Mint. The Standing Liberty Quarter was designed by Hermon Atkins MacNeil, who won a competition to redesign the coin. Type One (1916-1917) featured Liberty on the obverse and an American eagle in flight on the reverse. Liberty carries an upraised shield in her left hand and an olive branch in her right hand; most notably, this coin was the only circulating coin to feature Liberty with a bare breast. There is some controversy over who modeled for the Standing Liberty Quarter, but it was either Doris Doscher or another Broadway actress, Irene MacDowell.
